What are Tooth Sealants?
Tooth sealants are thin coatings that are brushed onto the chewing surface of teeth. The coating is made from a tooth colored acrylic and is able to seep deep into grooves and crevices, protecting teeth from the buildup of plaque. By protecting the surface of the teeth, sealants help prevent cavities, enamel ware and decay. Some grooves and spaces in teeth cannot be effectively cleaned by brushing or flossing; sealants can protect these areas.
Sealants are normally bonded to premolars and molars (teeth found in the back of the mouth). They take only a few minutes to completely set and can provide solid protection for up to ten years! The process is pain free and includes: thoroughly cleaning and drying teeth, applying an acid to roughen the teeth surfaces and then applying the sealant. Some dentists use a special light to help the sealant set quickly. During regular dental visits, your dentist will check on the state of your tooth sealants and determine when you may need a replacement.
